Storyboards serve as a visual organizer that illustrates the sequence of content for the given curriculum; they are used to save both time and money. In my experience, the storyboard oftentimes begins with drawing a rough draft based on the knowledge of the project I have gained from stakeholders and subject matter experts (SMEs). Once I have a basic understanding of the audience, environment, expectations and purpose, I then put the content into a template that will best provide the stakeholder and SME with a potential outline of projects structure and format. Please take a minute to view the storyboards below that I have created for various projects using different templates and methods.

Medical Coding Branched Tutorial
Overview of Project
Purpose
The purpose of this tutorial is to assist college students who are studying to become allied health professionals. Breaking down complex terminology and understanding how it is accurately applied to medical records is a requirement for people within the medical industry as the incorrect interpretation can drastically effect patient care, billing, and coordination of care. Additionally, this tutorial demonstrates how to accurately code a medical record based on the analysis of a desensitized patient file. This a very relevant topic because improper coding leads to billing problems for the doctor, patient, and insurance company. The goal is help learners gain an understanding of word structure and learn how to accurately code medical terms and procedures for billing purposes and patient treatment. Learners will also learn about important changes to legislation and best practices that will ensure a smooth transition to the updated ICD-10 coding system effective as of October of 2015. Content The focus of this project is the structure and meaning of medical terminology and how misinterpretations and or coding errors impact patients, medical assistants, billers, and coders. This project also focuses on the importance of current legislation such as HIPAA and ICD-10. The first objective will be accomplished by breaking down terms into their various parts: root word, combining form, prefix, and suffix. I will share some rules for understanding different word parts and provide examples of root words, prefixes, and suffixes. Learners will be given basic rules to follow when dissecting medical terms for patient files and billing purposes. Learners will be able to practice their knowledge by completing an optional practice activity that permits them to test their knowledge about the general medical terminology rules. Next, the learners will be able to view information regarding HIPAA rules and changes to ICD-10 coding system. They will be able to view some best practices that adhere to the October 15, 2015 changes to the ICD-10 coding system. Learners will be able to watch an analysis of a desensitized medical record to show them what to look for when coding and how to avoid making some common coding errors. This information and the accompanying activities will allow the learners to demonstrate their knowledge of how the slightest misinterpretation in billing and or coding can drastically impact how the doctor proceeds with treatment for the patient, what the insurance provider will pay for, and justification of why care is needed. After reading a summary review, the learners’ knowledge of this information will be assessed by a final quiz that requires them to match a topic with the correct statement. I worked closely with a subject matter expert (SME). The SME has a Master of Science in Training and Development, is a Certified Professional Coder (CPC), and a Certified Outpatient Coder (COC). Working with my SME was a great experience and totally necessary as I had no prior knowledge about this topic. Target Audience The target audience is college students taking courses at a community college to become allied medical professionals. Course Development Application This tutorial was created using Articulate Storyline 2. I used many of the features this program offers including various types of interactions, motion paths, quizzing, animations, illustrated characters, triggers and state changes. |

This project is also accompanied with a scholastic paper that breaks down the entire project plan. It includes a thorough analysis of the organizational goals, needs assessment, and front-end, goal, learner, contextual analyses, as well as, performance objectives, assessment instruments and formative and summative evaluations.
Though most often I create my storyboard in a digital format sometimes I just have to do things the old fashioned way and use sticky notes or my notebook.
